Board
Board, or paper board, is the term used to describe the core material that a rigid box is made with. There are several types of board that can be used. The most common types used are Chipboard and White vat board. While the thickness can vary depending on the application, the thickest caliper of single ply Chip board is around .050.

Chipboard is a non-bending paper board which has variations in appearance. These variations come from the manufacturing process and can include slight differences in color and shades from run to run. Chipboard is generally made from mixed recycled fibers which causes inconsistencies in the finished product.

White vat board is also a non-bending paper board, but has a bright white layer on one side consisting of recycled news or other clean paper fibers to give it a bright uniform color.

Pasted chipboard is a term used when two or more sheets of paper board are glued together to form one sheet. This process is used when a sheet over .050 thick is needed. It is common in the bindery industry.

Lined board is a term used when one or both sides of a sheet of paper board are lined with a layer of paper. This is generally used when you are trying to achieve a very white and smooth side for the interior of the box. It is also common when a particular color is needed on the interior of the box to either match or contrast with the boxes outer wrapping.

Weights and measures

A bundle of board is a stack of paper board that weighs 50 lbs. Most paper board manufacturers calculate quantities of paper board in bundles. The quantity of sheets within a bundle will vary depending on the size and thickness (caliper) of the sheet.

Caliper is a term used to describe the thickness of the sheet of paper board. Generally paper board is measured in 1/1000 of an inch increments and is written as a decimal of an inch. An example of this would be box application that requires a .050 point sheet of paper board. This would be paper board that is 50/1000 of an inch thick.
