To better help you understand the rigid box industry and educate you to the benefits of applying rigid boxes in your business, we will explain some of the common terminology used in this industry. A rigid box is a thickness of paper board, typically covered with a layer of paper and formed into a stiff, “rigid” box.
Glue
Glue is the substance that is applied to the covering wrap paper so it will bond to the paper board. There are several types of glues that are common in the rigid box industry. One of the most common glues are called “cakes glues”. These glues come in a semi-solid “gold bar” shape and are heated to a liquid form. This liquid glue is then applied hot to the back side of the wrapping paper and then applied to the paper board. Another type of glue used in manufacturing rigid boxes is a white resin cold glue. This type of glue is applied cold and is typically used in applications where the materials are difficult to bond together.
Turn-In
The Turn-In is the flap of paper that is turned into the inside of the box during the manufacturing process.
Corner Lap
The corner lap is the flap of paper that turns around the outside corner of the box and is hidden by the short side flap. This flap helps ensure the strength of the corner of the box.
Tight Wrap
Tight Wrap is a term used to describe a rigid box where glue is applied to the entire sheet of cover wrap paper; and then machined so that it is glued completely down to the box.
Packing
Packing is the term that is used to describe how the rigid box is packaged for shipment to the end user. We offer several different types of packaging systems.
Carton Packing
Carton packing is when the finished product is packed into corrugated cartons for shipping. This method is the best method when it comes to protecting the finished product during transport and for storage purposes.
Kraft Wrapped Bundles
This is where a pre-determined stack of finished rigid boxes is wrapped with kraft paper and taped; similar to the process you might use when wrapping a gift. This is a common packing option when the finished boxes are not being transported great distances or in any danger of being overstacked and crushed in storage.
String Tied Bundles
This process is where a pre-determined stack of finished rigid boxes is tied together with a white twine to hold it together for shipping. While there is not a great deal of protection for the boxes, it is very convenient in applications where the finished product is going into another production process to be filled. There are no packaging materials to dispose of other than the string.
Foil Stamping
This is a method of applying an image or logo to paper using a colored foil. A raised plate, generally made of brass or copper is heated and pressed between the colored foil and the paper. This process “burns” the image into the paper, which in turn is glued to the paper board.
Offset Printing
This method of printing is very common in our industry. Offset Printing is printing applied to paper using multiple colors and printing plates to produce your designs, logos, etc.
Silkscreen Printing
This method is where ink is forced through openings in a piece of fine mesh screening that has been setup with a specific design on it. Some applications can be multiple screens with different designs to be used with many colors to come together in one final design.
